Platelet-rich plasma therapies

Through adequate treatment of collected blood samples, we can extract platelet concentrate suspended in a small amount of plasma. Depending on a blood sample, we can obtain cell concentration which is three to five or even more times higher than in the initial stage.

Platelets are derived from megakaryocytes in the bone marrow. They are primarily responsible for maintaining proper homeostasis and, when necessary, for rapid control of bleeding.

Platelets are necessary for tissue repair, blood vessel reconstruction and organ regeneration.

They contain numerous growth factors that are released after the platelets have been activated. We know around 1,500 active proteins contained in platelets.

The most important ones include:

  • Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) – one of the growth factors, or proteins regulating cell differentiation and division. It plays an essential role in the process of vascular creation, influences tissue regeneration and skin reconstruction;
  • Transforming growth factor (TGF) – it influences the formation of intercellular junctions, boosts DNA synthesis, proliferation and differentiation of different cell types, stimulates fibroblasts to produce collagen and has an anti-inflammatory action;
  • Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) – it influences the growth of blood vessels (angiogenesis), activates microcirculation and is the key mediator of cell repair following injuries;
  • Epidermal growth factor (EGF) – it influences the growth and differentiation of keratinocytes, creation of small blood vessels and formation of collagen;
  • Fibroblast growth factor (FGF) – it is responsible for cell growth and specialisation and blood vessel formation, and plays a crucial role in the division and differentiation of numerous cells.
  • Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) – it regulates the physiology of each tissue type; its concentration increases with the growth of the body and decreases with ageing.

Platelet-rich plasma therapies are used in:

  • skin revitalization procedures (particularly in the hard-to-reach areas around the eyes and neck);
  • the treatment of acne scars;
  • the treatment of alopecia (hair loss);
  • the improvement of the tone, density and flexibility of the skin;
  • faster healing of wounds after laser therapies;
  • skin ageing prevention.
