Patch tests

Patch tests

Epidermal patch tests (EPT) are conducted in allergy diagnostics of various types of eczema, particularly in the case of suspected contact eczema. By prescribing these tests, a physician wants to assess the skin’s reactivity to a series of different chemical substances that the patient comes into contact with in everyday life.

EPTs are performed on unaffected skin areas of the back, where allergens contained in petroleum jelly are applied in special patches and glued by means of plasters. The plasters with allergens should be in permanent contact with the skin for 48 hours. After this period, the tests are removed and the first readout is performed. The next readout is performed after the end of the third day (after 72 hours) from application. While the tests are present on the skin, the patient should not immerse or soak this body part in any liquid.
